Contemporary Abstract Artist

Zina Karaman - Abstract Painter

Zina Karaman comes from a multicultural background. Her parents are Dutch and Lebanese-Palestinian, and she was born and raised in London.

Her heritage gave her insight into different cultures; creativity and Art is expressed through and influenced by our culture. She likes to explore and incorporate these influences into her creative work. The artists who inspire her frequently use their individual and cultural identity as a strong starting point for their innovative ideas and work.

London is creative and dynamic because it is such a multicultural and multi-racial melting pot and a global centre for arts and art training. From history and the present, the variety of stimuli creates a questioning, seeking, and originality aspect that she aims to simulate in her work. A unique quality of Art is that it can explore all aspects of human behaviour and emotions, positive and negative, in a constructive and meaningful way.

Because of the rise and influence of technology, the world can be extraordinarily technological and system-based. It can be conforming and restricting as well as progressive. The direct opposite of conformity and mass order and mass production is why Zina continues to study different forms of Art; it represents an individual process of experimentation, discovery, and self-expression.

Art represents this for her and why it affects her and is essential. Her works express the feelings and emotions she faces in different moments and times in her life.

It is of extreme importance to her that her work has a responsible, ethical and human impact on society. It is often easy, especially among the young, to become self-absorbed in the world of self-interest and self-obsession. Art is an expression and communication beyond words that has a powerful effect on us. One can see this in the popularity of contemporary Art and Art from the past. Millions of people, most not art specialists, visit the Tate Modern and other museums and galleries to be stimulated, challenged and inspired by something real and individual. Her wish is that her Art will reflect the cultural diversity within her and the world around her.

Her desire to create things of fascination and creative beauty comes from an interest that started long ago. She loved the feeling she got when making and creating. Her interest in the subject allowed her to experiment with various materials, techniques, processes, media, and ideas, which ignited her desire to study art intensively. She took Art and Design as the main subjects in both GCSE and A level and received A*'s.

Initially, she focused on intensive drawing. An intensive portfolio course at the Chelsea College of Art had her look at diverse ways to improve and incorporate different skills. She realised how important it was to explore various processes and working methods by exploring numerous techniques.  Figure drawing was the central theme in her work from 2017-2019. She took a two-week life-drawing course at the Charles Cecil Studio in Florence to develop her direct observation skills and understanding of the human form. She explored various techniques that required the use of different media, which set her enthusiasm to use a range of materials, techniques, and processes in inventive and personal ways. She began researching artists connected to her feelings and ideas about her work.
